Ben And The Pimps Ben And The Pimps are an eclectic mix of country blues rock and Eastern European folk music, taking influences from Tom Waits, Serge Gainsbourg and The Meat Puppets. Own Little World It's all about being a cat trapped in dogland. But you can find beauty anywhere if you look hard enough. Name me a cause more noble than that. If you want a genre (and you do) this is alternative pop/rock. Narco glam with acoustic roots. Absinthe with both ears. Spawling and lush. Intimate and jagged. Own Little World's debut album, "Stuff of Myth and Mystery" was released in August 2004 and is distributed in Europe by Backs Records/Shellshock. The album is short and sweet, featuring 8 musical gems plus a bonus video track ("I'm Disappearing") written and directed by BAFTA nominated director, Philip Barnard (Gone to the Dogs). Since its release the album has met with widespread critical acclaim and received extensive European radioplay as well as bagging the band a BBC session. Ultimately the album is just the culmination of collective years of off-beat experience, combined with their trademark blend of twisted and often beautiful imagery. The band are Alec Bastin (Cousin Al - guitar/vocals), Matt Tooke (drums) and Martin Clement (bass). Cats make good loners but in dogland we've got to stick together. White Russians WHITE RUSSIANS came together in 2003, on the night of Ben’s 26th birthday, to record four songs that Ben had written when he was ten years old. The Hi Low Song, Crocodile Don’t Eat My Socks, The Smokey Joe Song and The Monster Song were all committed to tape in a frightening fucked up fashion. The band played their first gig the same year in a village hall in West Sussex on the occasion of a five year old girl’s birthday party. The Hi Low Song proving down especially popular. From that naive and childish start, the band passed into troublesome adolescence, writing and recording new songs; Shepherd’s Pie, A Fish Called Ben and classic last orders call to action that is Moonshine. They played anywhere they could in London between the hours of 1am and 3am in the morning. In 2004, WHITE RUSSIANS accepted an invitation to go to Austin, Texas for the SXSW festival. Austin became a spiritual home. The band had already covered the Butthole Surfers’ Human Cannonball and on their return to London, Ben took the lead from The Meat Puppets in composing the new live favourite Chicken. Now signed to F-shine records, the band are writing and recording songs of remarkable maturity; Walk The Dog and Ugly Men (to name the only two) and are headlining venues from Chalk Farm to Mornington Crescent on a regular basis. They have almost grown up... |
